The Merchant is where you can purchase items with not only Gold, but Food/Wood/Stones/Iron/Silver. Items and their prices at the Merchant are not fixed - they have a probability of changing, so sometimes you can find rare items at a much lower price than the shop.
Tip: One of the very rare, expensive items will be selected as the Jackpot item. The Jackpot item has a chance of appearing on the Merchant's item list.
